ELECTRONIC DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS

Continuous technological progress in recent years has seen modern cars become veritable travelling high tech computer labs equipped with electronic driver assistance systems developed to ensure driver and passenger safety as far as possible.

These electronic devices are known as car ADASs, i.e. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. This acronym stands for all the devices inside the car that enhance driving comfort and safety levels.

Therefore, when we talk about ADASs, we mean advanced electronic systems such as rain sensors, twilight sensors, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, parking sensors, lane change warning systems and automatic signal recognition, among many others.
All these devices are installed on newly approved cars to minimize the risk of accidents and make life in the car easier.

Car ADASs mainly consist of the control systems listed below:

Adaptive cruise control adattivo (ACC): i.e. speed control. It is one of the most popular car ADASs because it means the car drives itself once the desired cruising speed and safety distance are set. Thanks to this device, the car accelerates and brakes according to traffic conditions and the driver is able to relax in their seat while keeping the situation under control.
Collision warning: the front and rear collision warning system is without a shadow of a doubt the most popular ADAS among the car safety devices that are now even found on the most recent small cars. Thanks to a video camera or radar at the front of the car, this safety ADAS detects dangerous situations and warns the driver with an audible signal. The rear collision warning system does the same thing in the event of something coming up behind. Before impact, safety systems are activated to prepare the car occupants for the collision.
Keeping in lane: other car safety systems which are rapidly becoming more and more widespread on modern cars help you stay in lane. In this case too, the vehicle’s electronic brain interacts with the cameras and radars installed on the car and detects the lane dividing line, alerting the driver if they cross it. One concrete example of when they are useful is on motorways: the ADAS steps in when the driver leaves the lane without indicating first. The most advanced ADAS of this kind is the Lane Keeping System which, besides warning the driver when they cross into another lane, automatically returns the vehicle to the original lane.
